Increased food insecurity is driving malnutrition among vulnerable host community and internally displaced persons but children under 5 especially are bearing the greatest brunt. Also, a combination of factors including internal conflict, the impact of covid-19 and climate driven factors, the prolonged inflation is driving food insecurity. It is especially tough during this lean season, which started in May and lasts until October, when food stocks have been depleted and households are waiting for the planted crops, which are harvested beginning November. According to the Sudan Humanitarian Needs Overview for 2021, at least 8.2 million vulnerable people are in need of food and livelihoods assistance.
